Over 50 years building handcrafted stringed instruments in the UK.
Alan Miller is a luthier specialising in acoustic, electro-acoustic and solid body electric guitars. Alongside his own workshop practice, he taught guitar making for 25 years at Millfield School and continues to teach from his workshop.
His work spans a wide range of instruments, from traditional guitars to more unusual builds including harp guitars, citterns, bowed guitars, Irish bouzoukis and nyckelharpas. Each instrument is individually crafted using carefully selected materials, with a focus on playability, tonal balance and longevity.
A five-string electric cello built by Alan won 1st prize in the National Design and Woodworker of the Year competition, which is currently on tour with Hannah Moule.
Alan continues to build a range of guitars and other stringed instruments, with a selection available to play and evaluate in the workshop. Recent work includes the development of a Swedish nyckelharpa.
A full range of repair, re-fret and customisation work is undertaken. All work is fully guaranteed to the original owner.
Commissions are undertaken using the client’s choice of hardwoods and hardware, with a full discussion of requirements at the outset. Most instruments are completed within approximately three months.
Prices start from £2300. A deposit may be required to cover materials, with final payment dependent on complete client satisfaction.
As with all instruments, a full guarantee is provided covering materials and workmanship for the original owner.
